Posted in Personal
We are so excited to welcome a new member to the FINE team! Please put your hands together for Joe Flory! He’s joining us as a Senior Designer and specializes in interactive and branding. He has 10+ years design experience and worked in NYC for many years before coming to Portland. Joe has a background in fine arts and enjoys mid-century advertising. Below are a couple of questions we asked Joe to get to know him a little better:
Where do you hail from?
I was born in Lancaster, PA and have lived in Philadelphia, NYC and Argentina before moving out to Portland in 2010.
How did you come to find FINE?
I’m always checking out what local agencies are doing, so FINE was on my radar for some time.
How do you most often find your ideas and inspiration?
I like to draw from the past — I’m constantly looking at works by the pioneers who shaped modern design. That post-war period of design from the forties to the seventies. I also go to galleries on first Thursdays here in Portland. And like most designers, there’s a few agencies and designers that I always go to for inspiration.
Who is your idol/role model? Why?
I have a lot of them, but as far as design goes I admire people like Alvin Lustig, who was designing book covers (and magazines and interiors, etc) that look totally contemporary and unique 50 plus years later.
What’s your favorite Pantone color? Why?
Pantone Black C. Can't go wrong with black!
How many cups of coffee do you drink each day?
Usually one cup of french pressed coffee each morning. I usually hit up Extracto and Caffe Vita (both near my house) on the weekends for an extra dose of caffeine.
What are your favorite types of treats?
Justin's dark peanut butter cups, IPA, Old Fashions, and Izze soda pop
